Chapter Eight

“What if we’re looking about this case all wrong? What if it has nothing to do with Mr. Nektar?” Piper asked quietly from behind her scarf. We’d all gotten fortified with our outer gear, using the two snowmobiles to get us to the wharf as quickly as possible. “Mr. Dorsey and Mr. Turnhill were best friends. What if this has something to do with them specifically?”

“We could be focusing too much on the most convenient motive,” Knox pointed out, “but why else would those two be specifically targeted? Marilyn doesn’t believe her husband cheated on her, so that pretty much resolved what we initially believed was the only other reason for Dorsey’s murder.”

You might want to inform Mr. Emeric that we have yet to rule out Ms. Rusco. That woman strikes me as the type to go to extreme lengths to protect her family. I daresay she reminds me a little of you, dear hexed one.

Knox only had his jacket on, though the scarf that Piper had knitted him hung loose around his neck. His body temperature ran high, given that he was affected with lycanthropy. The cold didn’t bother him in the slightest, while the three of us were practically shivering as the gusts of winds pierced through even our new thermal underwear.

The delicious scents coming from that direction are quite intoxicating, are they not? In case you hadn’t noticed, dear hexed one, we have skipped lunch.

An older gentleman in uniform, who could only be Sheriff Torkin, was standing next to a man who knew exactly how to dress for this brutal weather. He didn’t seem to be the least bit affected by the bitter cold winds either, as he leaned over what was left of Wallace’s burned-out snowmobile.

“That’s Albert,” Orwin replied, advancing close enough to us that he’d heard my curiosity on what was taking place near the dock. “He’s the town’s mechanic. I was able to walk by them under the ruse of speaking with Henry regarding our snowmobile rentals. I’ve booked them through tomorrow, by the way.”

I appreciate that, alien hunter. These oversized machines give me a place to sit, thereby allowing my paws a brief respite from the cold.

“What did Albert and the sheriff have on their minds?” I asked, wishing that I’d bought those hand warmers I’d seen next to the cash register at the trading post. I made a mental note to stop there on our way back to the inn. “Do they believe someone tampered with Wallace’s snowmobile?”

“Well, all that is on the sheriff’s mind is how this accident could affect Henry’s business for the tourist season.” Orwin’s nose was quite red, and this time it had nothing to do with Pearl and her dander. “He hasn’t made any correlation at all between Dorsey’s murder and Wallace’s accident.”

“Maybe there isn’t one,” Piper commented, stepping around Orwin so that he was the one to take the brunt of the wind. “Wallace could have simply had an accident.”

“I highly doubt that.” Orwin adjusted his black ski cap and stared at the mechanic through his black-rimmed glasses.
